QUICK ANNOUNCEMENT! This wiki contains Spoilers about The Most Powerful God in the World. Please Read Carefully. |
Won Gong (원공), Myriad Arms Avalokitesvara/Guanyin (천수관음 — 千手观音) of the Millennium's Shaolin Temple, one of the Nine Great Sects & One Union. He has been suffering from dementia for a long time. Won Gong was truly a long-forgotten presence. Honestly, since there was no news, people had guessed, as the monks and masters did, that he had stayed silent and passed away. Looking around, most of those who had not overcome the weight of time and left the world were barely clinging to life, lying weakly on their beds awaiting death. Even the masters of the murim couldn't avoid death. They just faced death a little later than others. So, people like Pung Jeon and Myeong Won, living peacefully at their age were few and far between. However, wasn't Won Gong an individual from the same era as them, or even a little older?
Overview[]
Although Myeong Won refers to Won Gong as Elder, there wasn't much difference in age between them. If judged by the Shaolin distribution, Won Gong was one level higher than Myeong Won, but that was because Won Gong was the youngest of the Won family. At the Shaolin Temple, there are three hereditary titles that have been passed down through generations:
The first is Vajra (금강 — 金剛). Currently, it is given to Myeong Won, it was a title given to the monk who inherited the teachings of Bodhidharma through generations.
The second is Arhat (나한 — 羅漢). It is a title given to the disciple who possesses outstanding martial prowess and unwavering faith among the rising talents who will lead the next generation of the Shaolin.
The last is Myriad Arms (천수 — 千手). It is a title that signifies Avalokitesvara/Guanyin with a thousand hands, and it has been recognized as the final bastion guarding the Shaolin Temple. And Won Gong, who was afflicted with dementia, was the Myriad Arms of his era.
Vajra, Arhat, Myriad Arms. Unlike the Abbots who can retire at their own will, these three pass on their titles to successors after death. Won Gong, who fell victim to dementia, became like a child. No, to be precise, his inner self occasionally became like that of a child. Won Gong experienced a congenital condition known as "Tianxing" where his growth stopped naturally, so from the moment he became a disciple of Shaolin, he didn't grow at all. In simple terms, a person who outwardly was like a child and inwardly like an old man due to dementia, ended up turning even his inner self into that of a child due to dementia.
"Dementia, dementia…" When viewed from the perspective of releasing dementia (癡呆), it is composed of the characters for "foolish" (痴) and "dull" (呆). In other words, it's a compound word that expresses foolishness. This expression hasn't been around for long. Not too long ago, people would say they became senile due to aging, incurred divine punishment for mistakes made in their youth, or were possessed by spirits.[1]
Great War[]
The Demonic Cult and the Central Plains Murim can never coexist. This is because one side seeks to seize, while the other seeks to protect. As a result, numerous great wars between the righteous and demonic factions have been recorded in history. Though each was different, there was one commonality: the wars always began with the Demonic Cult's invasion of the Central Plains. For the Central Plains had no reason to covet the distant, barren Heavenly Mountains of Xinjiang. Additionally, as the saying goes, "a cornered rat will bite the cat," the Central Plains Murim, seeing itself as the cat, would naturally throw the Xinjiang province to the Demonic Cult as if offering it. After that, as always when cornered, the Demonic Cult would huddle in Xinjiang, waiting for the right moment.
Several decades ago, according to records, the most recent and last great war between the righteous and demonic factions began with a sudden attack by a thousand-strong special forces unit of the Demonic Cult on Shaolin Temple. It was an ambush without the slightest warning, causing severe damage to Shaolin Temple. If it weren't for Master Won Gong, the Myriad Arms, it could have led to the extermination of the temple. Naturally, the great war between the righteous and demonic factions erupted, and the enraged Shaolin Temple sent their elite disciples to the Demonic Cult while doing their best to recover from the damage. Though the war resulted in massive losses, it ended in victory for the righteous faction. They killed the Demonic Cult Lord, the root cause of all this, drove the vicious Demonic Cult back into the corners of Heavenly Mountains, and returned to the Central Plains.
Renowned for this deed and honored with the title of Nine Stars, Myeong Won, the Vajra, who returned to Shaolin Temple, immediately sought out Master Won Gong.
- "How is Master Won Gong's condition?"
- "Though it is better than before, it is still..." The physician examining Master Won Gong closely bowed his head in regret.
Master Won Gong, Myriad Arms, had single-handedly defended against the Demonic Cult's ambush and barely survived, but his condition was poor. Though he regained consciousness after nearly a year, he still needed rest to stabilize his body and mind. Myeong Won cautiously held Master Won Gong's hand in his own. To the Shaolin Temple, he was a benefactor, and to Myeong Won, who had almost been killed by the Grand Demon leading the attack on Shaolin, he was a savior.
- "Master, just stay alive. If you stay alive... I, your humble disciple, will devote my life to repaying your kindness."
Myeong Won, now a hero of the Central Plains Murim, devoted himself to caring for Master Won Gong. After a long period of rest, Master Won Gong eventually recovered, with Myeong Won by his side, assisting him as time passed. However, Master Won Gong later developed dementia. Just as he had vowed before Buddha in his youth, Myeong Won left Shaolin Temple to care for the ailing Master Won Gong for the rest of his life.[2]
