Gwak Beom (곽범), Third-in-Rank of the Dark Dragon Gang. During the time when Gwak Beom was a disciple, the Third-in-Rank met his end after making a mistake that angered the leader. Even though he became the Third-in-Rank, it wasn't a position he was particularly thrilled about. If luck wasn't on his side, he could end up in the same situation.

Background[]

Born into a poor family, he possessed neither notable talents nor abilities. Yet, among his peers, he was known for his sturdy build and adept fist fighting skills, earning him the role of the neighborhood bully for a long time. As he aged, he transitioned from the local bully in the alleyways to the adult world. Naturally, he delved into cheap martial arts, becoming a Dark Path Member, and somehow managed to survive until now.

Master and disciple. The relationship between these two is truly intricate and subtle. This is especially true in the Murim. Can a Martial Artist, who values their skills more than life itself and has devoted their entire life to cultivation, easily pass on their martial arts to others? If the martial artist belongs to a Martial Sect, they would choose a talented individual to become their disciple, hoping that the disciple would faithfully uphold the teachings of the sect. In the case of Renowned Families, they would look for someone with the same bloodline. Naturally, they would prefer someone with thicker blood ties to be their disciple.

What about those like Gwak Beom, who has no discernible roots? It's not the Dark Path for nothing. Betrayal is a daily occurrence, and normalcy in the master-disciple relationship is a rare sight. In the underworld, disciples and subordinates share the same fate. More often than not, the master is also the owner, and their disposition tends to be on the darker side.

Gwak Beom, too, fell naively into the world of the martial arts at first, living like a servant for two years. The result was a Third-Rate Martial Art, slightly better than the "Three Principles Heart Technique" (삼재심법 — 三載心法) and the "Three Principles Sword Technique" (삼재검법 — 三載劍法). At that time, the crazy old man was so obsessed that he couldn't sleep for two hours, starting his day with sweeping and ending it with mopping.

But now, he's back to sweeping again... The young lad with no beard on his chin had grown into a forty-year-old man. Yet, his situation remained the same. He became a bit weaker, compromised a bit more with reality, and became a bit stronger, that's all. He was still just an unknown dark path's nobody, even though he had lived what he thought was a fiercely competitive life. Looking back, nothing had changed. And this sentiment was evident in Gwak Beom's eyes.

Talent[]

Sword[]

The talent for wielding a sword was lacking in Gwak Beom. Typically, a single sword technique involves dozens of initial movements, which translates to hundreds or even thousands of interconnected actions. Objectively speaking, this presented an outrageously challenging difficulty for him. "His physique doesn't match the sword". Gwak Beom's body was overall slender. Of course, there are those who overcome the disadvantage of their innate body through talent, but Gwak Beom's talent wasn't quite at that level.

Spear[]

Perhaps a spear is the easiest weapon to handle in the world. When it comes to military training, the weapon that is easy to master is none other than the spear.

Items[]

Yaksha Mask (야차가면 — 夜叉面)[]

  • Black Mask
  • Wol gave it to him.

Foolish Effort Moves Mountains (우공이산 — 愚公移山) Talisman[]

  • He bought it from the Murim Alliance[3]
  • They said it can make one able to do things they have never thought they could do

Weapons[]

Broomstick[]

  • Song Yoon-Cheon gave it to him.
  • When he received it, he didn't realize due to the impact, but looking at it again, it was almost twice as long as other broomsticks, and its appearance was peculiar.
  • Broomsticks are usually made of lightweight, sturdy wood, but this one seemed like a hollow iron rod.
  • The substantial weight transmitted through both hands was almost challenging to wield with just one hand. It was incomparable to the sword he had favored.
